Bishop Ellis B. Bias

I was born in Buffalo New York in a Catholic Hospital, to Martha Leah Johnson Bias and Elmer Bias. My Mother was attending NYU and Father was a building contractor and a Methodist Minister. I moved to Richmond, Virginia at the age of seven years old after my Mother graduated. I grew up my entire child, young adulthood in the west End of town. I was the only Boy of Five Girls; our family was close nit with Mom working all the time or in the hospital due to diabetes. My Mother was a community interventionist for RCAP, Richmond Community Action Program, She would feed other Families with the little we had in House.

I grew up in a volatile and abusive environment, my Mother being beat by my father, and the help she gave others wasn’t there for her. I was saved (accepted Christ) at the early age of 10, watching Billy Graham on T.V as I got dressed for Church. The sermon was about understanding Jesus Love, I heard in church about heaven and Hell but never how God loves you regardless of what you do, who you are, His Son Died to help me get it right. I stood there and repeated the prayer but crying because I had resentment and doubt about God, whom my Mom would say is going to fix it after the beating she encountered. I was raised in a denomination where nothing was allowed as a teenager and young adult. I had no one to talk to about the home environment, as I grew older I came to know that some were aware of our home issues. I joined the military in 1969 served 3 years six months. I encountered heroin as a soldier during the Vietnam era, it was prevalent and plentiful. I was honorably discharged but a heroin attic that lasted 14 years, I didn’t during my addictive life that the God I accepted had a plan and there were things I would go through during the process. There were times in places doing the drugs others around me over dosed and I would squinch and say Jesus and lived to see today. I ended up incarcerated with a 40 year sentencing but the judge brought me back before the court made a statement, I don’t understand why but I’m reducing your sentence, (God had a Plan). I was a chaplain assistant and learned how to study the Bible, Hebrew and Greek interpretation. I was entrusted with the responsibility for the choir and their rehearsals, going through out the facility praying with inmates, leading many to Jesus. I was released and joined a ministry where I grew more in the word and in servant hood. I completed RCF Seminary College. I met a gorgeous, prophetic woman whom I eventually married (Pastor Lois C. Bias). We encountered, stood through, forgave much. I never wanted to be a preacher more lest a Bishop; but God had a plan. I earnestly am standing today in his calling and the work of Ministry; as Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 12:9 I echo it and give God ALL Glory
